Nathan Azarcon, is the bassist of the Filipino rock band Bamboo (band)
Bamboo]], and former bassist for other iconic bands like Rivermaya,pinikpikan and Kapatid, and brother of guitarist Nick Azarcon of Sinosikat?.
Early years; Bazurak Azarcon First started playing bass during early 90’s for punk funk rock outfit Bazurak. They covered songs from sex pistols, RHCP and the ramones. former members include juni lerma guitarist radio active sago project richard recto on vocals, paolo lerma on drums, jjohn Valencia on guitars, mark escueta drums rivermaya.

1993 auditions for the band were held by two virtual unknowns in the music industry, Lizza Nakpil and director Chito Roño . rico blanco andAzarcon were 90’s RIVERMAYA the first two members. The others consisted of Jessie Gonzales on vocals, Kenneth ilagan on guitars, Rome Velayo on drums Ilagan was replaced with Perfecto de Castro; Azarcon also recruited former Bazurak bandmate and childhood friend, Mark Escueta, to replace Velayo, as well as former classmate Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac to replace Gonzales. By November 1994, the band had released its first album, the self-titled Rivermaya, and its first single, "Ulan"(azarcon/blanco) shot to the top of the charts. Its second and third singles “awit ng kabataan and “214”(blanco) were the first songs to have a melodic bass interlude which would soon become an Azarcon staple. with the departure of de castro The band's second album Trip, blanco and azarcon filled in for guitar duties. The single “himala” contains a rare nylon guitar solo by azarcon on the instrumental part. However he refused to be credited with it. Azarcon also showcased his further musical growth on the funky finger style, ]]pop and slap]] heavy “is it sunny where you are”. His use of the root third and fifth as well as the double stops on the hit single “himala” complimented Blanco’s guitar playing and the Escueta, drum accents. In 1997, the band released its third album, Atomic Bomb. A more funkier and playfully melodic azarcon can be heard on stand out tracks such as “hinahanap hanap kita” and “sunny days”. The album also showcases Azarcons increasingly active songwriting on the hit songs “if and “luha”.

1998 departure of vocalist bamboo Manalac, the remaining rivermaya members recorded the album “its not easy being green”. It was not commercially well received as the band was still reeling from the loss of its charismatic frontman.

During the latter part of 1998 Azarcon started experimenting with reggae, afro Cuban, acid funk and Philippine indigenous music. His apprenticeship under sammy asuncion, guitar player of rock reggae band spy would lead him to the much sought after bass chair on the 1999 ATAS album of the grounbreaking ethnic rock group PINIKPIKAN.

Nagkaroon ng maraming album, komersiyal, at endoso ang banda. Sila rin ay tumugtog sa iba't ibang bansa; at ang kanilang kasalukuyang album ay ipinalaganap sa Asya, gaya sa Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, at Indonesia.

     The return of Bamboo Manalac as the front man of a new band was definitely one of the most awaited comebacks in Philippine music. Bamboo first broke into the scene in 1994 as the enigmatic front man of rock band Rivermaya. Nathan Azarcon, a childhood friend of Bamboo’s, was also in the band. In 1998, after 3 successful albums with Rivermaya, Bamboo chose to leave the band and the Philippines to continue his studies in the U.S.. After the departure of Bamboo, Nathan also left Rivermaya and joined the band Kapatid. It was there that Nathan worked with Ira Cruz, a veteran guitarist who had played with several local bands. It was while Bamboo was still in the U.S. that he began to talk to Nathan about the possibility of forming a new band. Nathan immediately discussed the plan with Ira. Ira then called Vic Mercado, a drummer and Zildjian ambassador he had played with in the band, Passage. Bamboo returned from the U.S. with little fanfare and jammed with his new bandmates.

     On their first session together, they knew without a doubt that this was it. Deciding on a name took longer a little longer. Bamboo Manalac was initially hesitant to use his name as the moniker of the band. But the other members prevailed eventually. “We explained to him that Bamboo connoted strength and durability. Also, we wanted a name that had a Filipino feel to it, “ relates Ira. Bamboo’s debut album “As the Music Plays” was released in February 2004. Led by the anthemic single, “Noypi” (a slang term meaning “Filipino”), the album immediately soared to the top of local sales charts. The album held its lofty position for all of 2004 as subsequent singles “Mr Clay”, “Masaya” and “These Days” all topped radio playlists around the country. “As the Music Plays” was certified double platinum and became the biggest selling album by a group in the Philippines for 2004. Not content with commercial success, Bamboo was also a critical favorite, topping many year end reviews and surveys. Among their 2004 accolades were: MTV Pilipinas 2004 Best New Artist, Best Group, Favorite Song, NU107 Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and 89.9TM and 93.1RX’s local artist of the year. Bamboo’s second album, “Light Peace Love” was released in June 2005 and immediately attained gold status. The album boasts ten songs of differing moods and subjects. From the nationalistic “Hallelujah” to the soulful “Much Has Been Said”, all the way to the social commentary of ‘Alpha Beta Omega’, Bamboo has certainly taken a huge step forward.

With the success of Bamboo in the Philippines, EMI Music Southeast Asia has released a regional version of the album this 2006. “This is exactly the kind of thing we want to do as a company,” says Hans Ebert, Executive Director, EMI SEA, “Identify great local talent and give it a platform regionally.” The regional version (released in countries Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand) is an all-English album taking songs from Bamboo’s first 2 albums. “We are really honored and excited to have been given this chance, “ says Bamboo, “We really think that we write music that not only touches Filipinos, but people from everywhere.”

Ira Cruz is a lead guitarist in the Philippines, currently working for Bamboo.

Ira Cruz, who had played with Introvoys from 1987 to 1991, joined Passage and Kapatid. In 2001, Ira rejoined Introvoys for the short-lived reunion run. After nothing much happened since, Ira decided to pursue other interests.

He had previous relationships with actress Mylene Dizon, Iza Calzado, and TV host and model Phoemela Barranda.

In time for Phoemela Baranda's birthday celebration sa The Buzz kahapon, September 30, nagpaunlak ng exclusive interview sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon ang kanyang boyfriend for two years at member ng Bamboo rock band na si Ira Cruz.

Matatandaang nabalita noong July ang hiwalayan nina Phoemela at Ira. Nadamay ang pangalan ng ex-girlfriend ni Ira na si Mylene Dizon na siyang naging dahilan diumano ng hiwalayan ng dalawa. Pero mariing itinanggi ni Mylene na may kinalaman siya sa split nina Ira at Phomela.

Ilang buwan ang lumipas at nabalitang nagkabalikan na sina Ira at Phoemela, na kinumpirma naman nilang dalawa.

Two weeks ago, pumutok ang panibagong kontrobersiya kina Ira at Phoemela. Pagkatapos daw lumabas ni Phoemela with Ira sa isang fashion show ay naaksidente silang dalawa. Ayon sa lumabas na balita, nagkasakitan ang magkasintahan sa loob ng sasakyan kaya sila nabangga.

Pinuntahan ng The Buzz ang mga presinto sa Makati para hanapin ang sinasabing police blotter na diumano'y ipinasok ni Phoemela. Pero walang record na nakuha ang The Buzz. Sa gitna ng isyu, tanging si Phoemela lamang ang nagsasalita habang nananahimik si Ira.

Finally, nagsalita na rin si Ira sa The Buzz kahapon upang bigyang linaw lahat ng isyung ikinakabit sa kanya at sa pakikipagrelasyon niya kay Phoemela.

Unang nilinaw ni Ira ang isyu kung bakit sila nagkahiwalay noon ni Phoemela.

"Kumbaga, parang our term pa nga, e, parang 'this is not helping the both of us.' Siguro it's more of the thinking of personal growth or whatever. Siguro, we were thinking along the lines of making bawi. That's what I thought, that's what we thought."

Nagbigay rin ng pahayag si Ira sa pagkakadawit ng pangalan ni Mylene sa hiwalayan nila noon ni Phoem.

"I'm sure she [Mylene] didn't know why kung bakit nadamay din siya doon. We're friends. But no, no, definitely," mariin niyang sabi.

Ikinuwento rin ni Ira kung paano sila nagkabalikan ni Phoemela.

"We only realized when it's lost, but it's not there anymore, di ba? After a while, nag-usap kami and then, of course, ‘how you're doing?' and all that stuff. And then, of course, along the line also, how is it going now? Tapos, umabot yung conversation na, kumbaga, I still feel the same way, I still love her and parang ganun na nga. So, we try [to] work things out. Kumbaga, we're still in the process of threshing out our issues," lahad ng gitarista ng Bamboo.

Sa isyu ng pananakit niya kay Phoemela, walang takot din itong sinagot ni Ira: "Ask Phoem, di ba? I don't want to sound defensive either."

October 1, is Phoemela's actual birthday. Pinadalhan ni Ira ng personal cake si Phoemela sa The Buzz kahapon na ikinatuwa naman ng TV host.

"Happy birthday and I just hope all your dreams come true. So, be careful what you wish for," wish ni Ira para kay Phoemela.

Francisco Gaudencio Lupe Belardo Mañalac[1], popularly known as Bamboo, is the former vocalist of the Filipino rock band Rivermaya. After Rivermaya embarked on a US tour, it was at that time that Mañalac decided to stay in Los Angeles, USA together with his family. After 5 years staying in the US, he returned to the Philippines and eventually went on to form his own band, Bamboo along with another former Rivermaya bandmate, Nathan Azarcon, (bass), and teamed up with Ira Cruz (guitars) and Vic Mercado (drums) from the band Passage.

The band was awarded band of the year in the 2004 MTV Pilipinas and 2004 NU Rock Awards. Mañalac was also awarded Vocalist of the Year in the 2004 NU Rock Awards. He also won an award in the 2004 MTV Style Awards in the Rock Style category.

Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac serves as the band's frontman. Contrary to popular belief, the band is not named after him. According to Ira Cruz, the guitarist, the word bamboo relates to strength and durability with an island feel to it.[1] Also, it's very Filipino and Asian at the same time. Their first priority for a band name during 2000s was "Audio Barangay" which means "Audio Neighborhood" in English. However, they realized that its a bit hard to pronounce and it is not that catchy compared to just "Bamboo." They also dropped the name "Audio Barangay" because Audioslave was formed roughly the same time during their band's formation, to avoid confusion.[citation needed]

Two of its members, Bamboo Mañalac and Nathan Azarcon, were formerly part of Rivermaya. The other two members, Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado, were former instrumentalists of another band, Passage. Ira Cruz and Nathan Azarcon were also former members of the band Kapatid during that time.[2]

Four years after their departure from Rivermaya, Mañalac and Azarcon caught up again with each other, during which Azarcon introduced him to Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado.

He is a son of a political icon in Mindanao, of an influential Muslim family.[citation needed] Despite this Mañalac spent most of his early life with his mother from the northern part of the Philippines.

Bamboo is widely considered in the Filipino rock scene for his vocal abilities.[citation needed] His trademark performing energy and versatile voice carries him through the band's mellower songs (in a style often compared to that of Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas) while giving energy to Mañalac's singing and scat-rapping through the band's more conventional rock numbers.[citation needed]

About Bamboo the Band

If you are also a fan of the rock band Rivermaya, you'll know that the enormously popular Bamboo Manalac fronted that band in the 90's. Rivermaya is credited with changing the entire soundscape of the Philippines music industry. And while the media often compares the sound of both bands, Bamboo's bassist Nathan Azarcon who was also a member of Rivermaya, firmly states Bamboo has a totally different sound. In fact insists, not only is it a "better band", but the "best band he has worked with so far." He and Manalac are childhood friends. When Manalac left in 1998 because he just wanted to do something different, Azarcon soon left too.
After 4 years, Manalac and Azarcon once again caught up with each other. Azarcon introduced him to Ira Cruz and drummer Vic Mercado. On their first jamming session together, they knew they had a great sound in the making. The camaraderie between these four is hard to miss. Especially between Manalac and Azarcon.
Bamboo released their debut album As The Music Plays in February 2004. The response was more than gratifying. The album achieved not only double platinum status, but became the biggest selling album by a group in the Philippines for that year! The album also walked away with numerous awards at AWIT Awards, NU107 Rock Awards, and of course MTV Pilipinas 2004, proving their appeal to fans and critics alike. Their next album, Light Peace Love, consisted of ten songs of differing moods and subjects, which is a pretty amazing achievement considering the album only took 3 months to record. This album has a softer sound with both it's lyrics and delivery. For this album they added more strings and a piano - even a trumpet.
