Bamboo Mañalac

Bamboo Mañalac

Francisco Gaudencio Lupe Belardo Mañalac[1], popularly known as Bamboo, is the former vocalist of the Filipino rock band Rivermaya. After Rivermaya embarked on a US tour, it was at that time that Mañalac decided to stay in Los Angeles, USA together with his family. After 5 years staying in the US, he returned to the Philippines and eventually went on to form his own band, Bamboo along with another former Rivermaya bandmate, Nathan Azarcon, (bass), and teamed up with Ira Cruz (guitars) and Vic Mercado (drums) from the band Passage.

Bamboo Mañalac

The band was awarded band of the year in the 2004 MTV Pilipinas and 2004 NU Rock Awards. Mañalac was also awarded Vocalist of the Year in the 2004 NU Rock Awards. He also won an award in the 2004 MTV Style Awards in the Rock Style category.

Bamboo Mañalac

Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac serves as the band's frontman. Contrary to popular belief, the band is not named after him. According to Ira Cruz, the guitarist, the word bamboo relates to strength and durability with an island feel to it.[1] Also, it's very Filipino and Asian at the same time. Their first priority for a band name during 2000s was "Audio Barangay" which means "Audio Neighborhood" in English. However, they realized that its a bit hard to pronounce and it is not that catchy compared to just "Bamboo." They also dropped the name "Audio Barangay" because Audioslave was formed roughly the same time during their band's formation, to avoid confusion.[citation needed]

Bamboo Mañalac

Two of its members, Bamboo Mañalac and Nathan Azarcon, were formerly part of Rivermaya. The other two members, Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado, were former instrumentalists of another band, Passage. Ira Cruz and Nathan Azarcon were also former members of the band Kapatid during that time.[2]

Bamboo Mañalac

Four years after their departure from Rivermaya, Mañalac and Azarcon caught up again with each other, during which Azarcon introduced him to Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado.

Bamboo Mañalac

He is a son of a political icon in Mindanao, of an influential Muslim family.[citation needed] Despite this Mañalac spent most of his early life with his mother from the northern part of the Philippines.

Bamboo is widely considered in the Filipino rock scene for his vocal abilities.[citation needed] His trademark performing energy and versatile voice carries him through the band's mellower songs (in a style often compared to that of Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas) while giving energy to Mañalac's singing and scat-rapping through the band's more conventional rock numbers.[citation needed]

hi bamboo, you are really a great singer, a total performer, a unique voice coupled with great and humble moves that electrifies your audience.Looking forward to see you also in a concert or in any show with Sarah G., you have a good chemistry. Continue that humility onstage and backstage, that is where the Lord, Your Creator is pleased. The Lord strengthens you, gives you more wisdom as you perform, a perfect health for you and your family. And never stop creating good music, that is your gift from the Lord above. Treasure it ... And in all things Lord Jesus is glorified ..
